May 13, 2024 marked a significant milestone in AI accessibility as OpenAI unveiled its latest innovation, GPT-4o. This new iteration of ChatGPT is not only faster and smarter but is also being offered free of charge to all users.
For educators, this development promises transformative benefits. In particular, it opens the door to using a range of GPTs designed to enhance educational practices. GPTs allow any user to build and share an agent-like bot that serves a specific purpose—from lesson planning to tutoring to analyzing complex datasets.
In this article, I’ll introduce you to some of the most effective education GPTs available, with a special focus on those tailored towards three key topics:
- Tutoring;
- Social-emotional learning (SEL) instruction, and;
- AI literacy.
Tutoring GPTs
- Research-Practice Integration Bot – translates research insights into practical and actionable advice for educators and their students
- Tutor Me (by Khan Academy) – designed to guide students through their math, science, and humanities questions (without spoon-feeding them the answers!)
- Universal Primer – “the fastest way to learn anything”
SEL Instruction
- Break the Ice – quickly generate SEL-focused icebreaker exercises that are age-appropriate
- Bully Buster – develop activities that help curb bully behavior
- CASEL Signature Practice Generator – create activities modeled after the CASEL Signature Practices framework
- Fidelity Checklist Generator – input an intervention and this GPT will create a fidelity checklist to ensure consistent step-by-step implementation
- Social Emotional Learning – an engaging SEL aid for educators that can suggest activities, adapt academic lesson plans to infuse SEL skills, and more
AI Literacy
- AI Literacy Tutor – develops activities to help build AI literacy skills
- Learn2Prompt4Edu – a prompt engineering tutor for students and teachers
While many educational use-cases of ChatGPT were held back due to equity of access issues3, the “democratizing” of GPT-4o offers a promising trend toward leveling the playing field, enabling more inclusive and adaptive learning experiences for students globally. And, as this technology continues to evolve, its potential to support personalized learning and democratize education around the world becomes more apparent, making it an indispensable asset in every educator’s toolkit.
